Spiritual direction &
fostering / adoption
Spiritual direction is a space to spiritually and emotionally breathe, re-center, and listen together for the movement of God in your life.
You can bring all your hopes, longings, fears, griefs, beauty, and joys in the fostering or adoption process and find a place to be heard, to heal, to grieve, to celebrate, and to reconnect with your deepest self & God.
It's not about problem solving, but lovingly noticing the interior movements of your heart and asking questions like, "Where might Spirit be inviting you in this?", or "As you pause with this feeling in your body, what wisdom might it have for you?" or, "As you discern your way forward, where do you sense life, possibility, and interior freedom?".
specific Things you might explore in spiritual direction as a resource parent:
• How God sees, comforts, and encourages you in the process, whether it's the first placement or the tenth
• How you trust God and let go of control (which you definitely don't have in this system!)
• How God is inviting you deeper into an open-handed posture of freely loving when you may end up saying goodbye
• How to hold onto long-term desires for family without grasping too tightly out of fear of loss, which only causes pain now
• How you are invited to walk with a child who is processing the grief of their own losses
• How God might be inviting you to open your heart in love to the birth family
• Beliefs around how God works in the world, especially when the case doesn't go how you hope or you witness injustice
• Your own identity as parents, or ways to receive more deeply God's love for our own inner child
• How God is with you in your grief or joy as a case ends, and eventually, if God is leading you to foster again
Two ways to experience Spiritual Direction: individually or in a group
INdividual SPIRITUAL DIRECTION
Individual spiritual direction is a dedicated space for you to spiritually and emotionally breathe. There is no rush or economy of words. We have extended time to pause, listen together, and explore ways that you are being drawn deeper into God’s love for yourself and others. Whatever may be coming up for you in your life or journey as a resource parent, there is room to be with it and allow the inner invitations of God for you to unfold.
TIME COMMITMENT:
55-60 Minutes on Zoom, usually once a month
$75-125 per session.
Please let me know if this sliding scale does not feel financially accessible and we can discuss options.
PRICE RANGE:
-
A normal session begins by bringing ourselves from our busy lives to be present in the current space and moment. Depending on your preferences, we may pause in silence, pray and connect with your sense of the sacred, or share a poem or art piece to contemplate. When you are ready, we begin with whatever question, experience, or life situation you would like to talk about.
My role is to listen deeply, ask evocative questions to help you reflect, and companion you in silence and contemplative practices. I often invite directees to engage their imagination, notice the body and its wisdom, compassionately tend to emerging feelings, or even use arts as a way to express and surface interior movements. These are all means of gently noticing movements in your spiritual life and deepening your experience of God’s love for you and those you care for.
-
Each session begins with some short invitation to reflect on the undercurrents of your life - what is happening at a spiritual heart level. It might be a poem, a verse, an art piece, or some “third thing” that helps bring your interior life to the surface and commit the group to be present to God for one another.
Then, our time together is shaped by a rhythm of one person sharing, with everyone else listening deeply to the person and to the Spirit, and then everyone has an opportunity to gently offer a contemplative response. This response might be to simply notice, ask clarifying or open-ended questions to draw the person deeper into their experience of God, or a gentle offering of a sacred text or something sensed. All of this is punctuated by silence and holding the person sharing in a place of loving prayer. This rhythm is repeated to give everyone a chance to share and be companioned at each gathering.

GROUP SPIRITUAL DIRECTION
Group spiritual direction is a process in which people gather together on a regular basis to assist one another in cultivating an ongoing awareness of God in all of life. They do so by sharing honestly from what is happening in their own lives and spiritual journeys and listening deeply to each other while remaining prayerfully present to God for each other.
This approach is a beautiful communal way to enter into deeper reflection on the ways God is forming you, while also inviting you to companion others in the process.
100-120 MIN. depending on group size. Groups usually meet once a month, and often commit to a set number of sessions at a time.

Nope! While I am most familiar with the Christian tradition and some Buddhist streams, you might have any or no specific religious background.
And whatever you believe, and whatever spiritual language you find most comfortable, that’s where we’ll start! The focus isn’t on getting the right answers, staying at the cognitive level. Instead, we pay attention to the inner movements of your life in dialogue with your sense of invitation for how to show up in the world.
-
Spiritual direction and therapy differ both in terms of methods and focus, even though the same life circumstances could be discussed in both settings. Therapy is focused on addressing presenting mental health, behavioral, and relational issues, getting to the root causes and healing past wounds and trauma. In contrast, spiritual direction is about deepening your compassionate connection with yourself and the Divine / Sacred / Reality, however you name it. It is about noticing what is emerging in the interior movements of your spiritual journey through all of life’s circumstances.
-
Nope! There may be follow-up steps that you discern during a session, but I will never assign something that you have to do before we meet again.
Occasionally I may suggest a practice to try or a helpful resource if it directly ties to what you are bringing to discuss in the session, but it is always entirely up to you whether to do anything with it!

I LOVE A GOOD QUESTION,
SILENCE HAS BECOME MY FRIEND,
I’M FINDING PEACE IN LETTING GO OF CONTROL,
MY JOY IS HELPING OTHERS FIND THEIR HOME IN THE HEART OF LOVE.
I’m a spiritual director trained through Stillpoint, and co-founder of The Table Collective, a creative interspiritual community. My own spiritual journey has been one simultaneously filled with curiosity and questions, as well as guiding experiences of Spirit. It has been a journey of healing, increasing inner stillness, reclaiming my creativity, and entering deeper into compassionate interconnection with the Divine.
My hope as I companion others is for them to find themselves as they experience the Love who knows and cares for all of who they are.
“Steven’s gift is being fully present to deeply listen and ask questions that bring forth a deeper recognition of what’s really going on. It allows me to express my inner turmoils, longings and joys. I always look forward to our times together because I know that I’ll be welcomed, accepted and listened to, and at the end of our time I’ll have new appreciation and courage to live into God’s invitations.”
